Nintendo Punk - 8bit Heaven

Ever listened to Daft Punk and wished they could sound a bit more, well, Nintendo-ey?

Ever played games down the local arcade and wished the tunes sounded a bit more Daft Punk-y?

Well wish no more. I've stumbled across a link to a free downloadable mp3 zipfile of an 8bit tribute to Daft Punk. And whilst on paper it's wrong, wrong, wrong, all I ask is that you take a listen to the Zombectro cover of Voyager or the Microchip cover of One More Time. There's no way a smile won't creep across your face.

I'm not saying this is music for the masses or an album you'll want to play over and over again but for a late Friday night grinning session it takes some beating.

They could have gone the whole hog and called it Daft Punk the Hedgehogs, Super Mario Daft Punk or Daft Punk Bandicoot - fortunately they didn't but those descriptions hint at what you get. Old Skool computer sound geeks covering Daft Punk tunes. Computer says yes. Click on link and follow instructions..

MP3 Zip-file Link - 8bit Collective - Da Chip (An 8bit tribute to Daft Punk)

I feel like a fat teenager whose been locked in his bedroom for 9 hours with just a Nintendo and a four pack of sausage rolls for company. In a good way of course.

Oh and I'm not hosting the download in case anyone fancies a whinge. It probably won't be up for long either, so grab it while you can - and if you like it loads make sure you support the people behind it in someway - buy a mate a copy or send some fucker a fiver.

MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD!!!

Its been a weird 24 hours...

I started my day reading about wallabies in Australia who were accidentally creating crop circles after munching on opium poppies and hopping around stoned.

I ended my day listening to people fawning all over the still warm body of the recently deceased Michael Jackson on BBC News.

Some of these people (especially the tabloid gutter rats) have dedicated pages and pages to Jacko over the years - calling him a freak, a paedophile, a disturbed man-child and much worse. Now, they're putting on their best bib and tucker and blurting wildly sycophantic garbage all over the news. It's a disgrace.

Weird or not. What is irrefutable is the way in which Jacko has changed music and how the impact he's had will never be beaten. Everyone in the world knows who he is - absolutely everyone. In, Thriller, he has an album that will never be beaten for sales. He's had a 46 year singing career and is truly an icon.

Such a shame he destroyed his face and body and lived such an unhappy life. Proof, maybe that money and fame can't buy you happiness I guess.

Rest in peace, Michael Jackson you mad bugger - here's hoping they've got fairground rides and water balloon fights in heaven - you deserve 'em...

God Is A Whale

Let's face it, we all like at least a little bit of freak folk from time to time, don't we? A bit of early, sitting cross-legged on a wooden box, Devendra Banhart... the beautifully giddy warblings of Animal Collective... The bearded, log cabin dwelling strum-alongs of Iron & Wine, Bon Iver and Phosphorescent... it's all lovely stuff.

Well, how about the less well-known but still lovely lo-fi musings of God Is A Whale (real name JM Clark - not sure what the JM stands for) from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA?

Imagine a young and nervously inebriated Neil Young channelling Jeffrey Lewis through a stash of basic recording equipment, whilst sitting next to a log fire in a strange little wood somewhere, beside a flask of mushroom soup and plate of deer meat - and you're sniffing around somewhere close to the fruity balls of this young man's talent. He's unsigned too - so you heard it here first - SIGN HIM UP - he's great!

Here's a link to a FREE download of his self-released debut album - God Is A Whale - Lamb on a Mountain

My current favourite track is the intriguingly perky instrumental, "Trees In The Park". It has a lovely, 'nature is smiling and all is well with the world' quality to it.

Check out his Myspace here too................... and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy
